Peer to Peer

Alright, seeing as I know so much less than Anthony concerning this subject, I was wondering what the best peer to peer network to use is.

Yeah, but I downloaded Limewire Pro, and I haven't seen anymore viruses on there since.

ok.......bitTorrent is a program to download torrent files

torrent files are patches of files......each patch is shared only by a certain amount of people

it's pretty useful for anime, and full music albums

and yeah.....i havent gotten any viruses from it either

Peer to Peer is a network where you don't connect to any central server (except for in the case of Limewire, where you connect to the search server) but to other people instead. It's notorious for having a large amount of viruses and spyware. BitTorrent, as Khalid said, are for torrent files. To explain this, you need to know how you usually download files. Usually, through FTP (File Transfer Protocol) you download files from start to finish. Through torrents, you download portions of the same file at once. So instead of downloading from start to finish, you might be downloading the start, finish, 1/2 way through, all at the same time. You receive these files from other people instead of a central server (Azureus has a new client, called Vuze. It's a torrent client and does have a central server, so this doesn't apply for everything.) The people who are only uploading in a torrent situation are called "Seeders". These are the people who already have the file downloaded. There are also "Peers", who are people who are also downloading the file. If they have more of the file than you do, they might also be uploading some of it to you. Some people are Peers without uploading anything, and this is generally frowned upon. A useful site for the terminology can be found here. As you can see, there's also a "Tracker". A Tracker is a "Server on the Internet that coordinates the action of BitTorrent Clients. Upon opening a torrent, you contact the tracker and receive a list of peers to connect to."

I just checked out BitTorrent. It says you have to buy the stuff there. Isn't it the purpose of a P2P program so that you don't have to pay for things?

Try TorrentSpy or The Pirate Bay. Just download a torrent program like Azureus, BitTorrent, or uTorrent.

Alright, I downloaded BitTorrent and the torrent for what I wanted, but then the time remaining thing just kept going higher and higher when I tried downloading. I let it sit for half an hour, when it eventually got up to 50 days remaining. Is this only for people with crazy bandwidth?
